This tour starts from the shore of the Stone Town where you depart in a Swahili dhow for Prison Island. The island, formerly a prison and quarantine station for slaves, lies just off the Old Stone Town and is now home to giant land tortoises that were imported from Seychelles in the late 19th century. Some of the tortoises are over a hundred years old! Once on the island, you have the opportunity to feed and pet the tortoises. Time permitting you may like to take a stroll through the forested interior where you will see a wide variety of birds, colorful peacocks, bats, and beautiful butterflies. Keep and eye for the shy and elusive Duikers – an unusual tiny antelope species. From the Prison island, you will sail to Pange Island (Sand bank). This astonishing white sandy bank is surrounded by clear crystalline warm water, an ideal place to relax with only the sound of the waves as they lightly crash and disappear at the edges of the bank and few sea birds that come to catch the tiny ghost crabs that roam the sandbank.
